History of the development of the BPMN business process notation

Post by mimakte »

The BPMN notation is quite strict. You should know important standards and rules when working with it. The appearance and location of graphic elements and connections between them cannot be changed.

The work of creating a diagram will not be difficult if a person understands the essence of the process, clearly plans the stages of its implementation and follows the sequence of actions when creating a diagram:

Defining boundaries . The diagram must necessarily reflect the beginning and end of the process.

Image of the main blocks . It is necessary to imagine the ideal course of the process and make a sequence of tasks, the implementation of which will lead to the set result.

Adding branches . You should consider all possible scenarios. It will be much more difficult if you put arrows from the very beginning of creating the diagram, which can be confusing.

Entering missing data . If required, documents, databases and various comments can be placed on the diagram.

Notation today is understood as a standard set of various commands and symbols created for widespread use. In fact, it is an established language used in programming and for describing business processes. You can create diagrams at your own discretion, but in this case this concept is not applicable. Because it is precisely the mass use, the existence of uniform rules and requirements that make notation a standard tool for everyone.

History of the development of the BP notation

The emergence of the BPMN notation, as well as the description of business process schemes, occurred simultaneously with the development of the information system in the 70s of the 20th century. In connection with the development of the latter, the need arose to apply such definitions: the automation of some processes created difficulties in organizing the work of the company's employees.

If previously information was transmitted only through human communication, now machines play a huge role in this. A computer cannot think independently, but only executes commands - therefore, there was a need to create algorithms and establish a procedure for processing both incoming and outgoing information.

Thus, notations are intended not only to help in creating a description of the work of company employees, but also their interaction with the information system. Text instructions have lost their relevance and have become inconvenient. Therefore, it became necessary to create standard schemes reflecting a certain sequence of actions. And most importantly, it was necessary to make them understandable not only for computer systems, but also for humans.

The pioneers in this area were the military in the United States of America. They were already using automated processes on a remote connection. Now we call this system the Internet. The wide application of information systems is what provoked the need to implement business process notations.
