A cloud data lake is “a centralized repository hosted in the cloud that allows you to store all structured and unstructured data at any scale, typically using an object store such as Microsoft Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS). Because it is located in the cloud, it can be interacted with as needed, whether for processing, analysis, or reporting. This shared data storage provides a unified source of truth for an entire organization’s data needs.”

Automatic scaling is the primary benefit of placing a data lake in the cloud . Additionally, due to its centralized location, cloud data lake infrastructure provides self-service access to users and developers.

While the first data lakes were built in companies’ own data centers, organizations began moving them to the cloud as infrastructure-as-a-service offerings became increasingly popular. In cloud data lakes, companies can pay only for the data storage and computing power they need , meaning they can scale up or down as needed.

A cloud data lake dramatically simplifies the effort to gain trusted insights and value from data, ultimately producing faster business results .



Data governance
In addition to clean, trusted data, organizations need an AI-powered data catalog that can visualize the entire data lake environment or subsets of it, integrated with metadata repositories and business glossaries. By being able to classify data based on domain, origin, lineage, personally identifiable information, and compliance sensitivity, users can analyze data based on multiple criteria. And by having the ability to prepare data intelligently and collaboratively, they can obtain data that is fit for purpose and directly accessible.
