China's Health Silk Road – Analysis, Covid, Funding and Global Implications

Why did you call your new report “The Health Silk Road 2020: A Bridge to a Future of Health for All?”
After bringing COVID under control domestically, from early March to late October last year, in just 7 months, China provided medical aid to more than 150 countries. This is extraordinary. In addition to medical aid, it has also provided funding to numerous countries affected by the virus, both directly by the Chinese government and its policy banks and through multilateral banks, in addition to the World Health Organization and Covax. Over the course of 2020, Chinese biotech companies subsequently developed, tested, and began distributing vaccines by the end of the year.

These global partnerships/relationships have extended beyond the 140 or so countries that previously signed the BRI MoU , including to individual countries in the EU and North Asia. Pharmaceutical companies based in North America, which had previously partnered with Chinese biotech companies, have played a key role in helping them grow in strength and scale to the point where the first Chinese vaccine was produced less than a month after Pfizer. Thus, we have seen China’s 2020 efforts extend beyond the BRI to all of humanity around the world.

Why is the Health Silk Road important for global public health governance?
In 2020, China demonstrated global leadership by becoming the first country to control the virus and then quickly changing course to provide emergency medical assistance targeting countries that had usa telegram number database already signed up to the BRI , as well as selected EU and North Asian countries. While China has effectively become a benefactor to these countries in several ways, strengthening their previous relationships, they have also become much more aligned with global health organizations, cementing a total of US$50 million in investment in the WHO during the first half of 2020 (194 member states) and joining Covax (180 countries) in the second half of 2020.

The combination of this global coalition, as well as what we perceive as the development of several hubs and distribution nodes along the 140 BRI countries, could provide updated health data as well as a basis for identifying possible future pandemics that most observers believe could occur.

Is there any new information you can share with us on the above issues?
COVID-19 has prompted China to become more actively involved in global health cooperation, taking measures such as sending medical teams to overseas countries to provide assistance, providing vaccines and loans to fight the pandemic to developing countries, and engaging in international cooperation.
