China: High-tech companies help Henan flood relief efforts with drones, satellites

(Global Times) - Chinese high-tech companies have deployed drones to help with rescue efforts in central China's Henan province after parts of the province were hit by unprecedented severe flooding that left 33 people dead.

"The Wing Loong unmanned aerial vehicle from Chinese telecom operator China Mobile was used in rescue work to provide emergency telecommunications signal in Henan," the company reported to the Global Times on Thursday.

The Wing Loong drone was deployed on Wednesday in Gunyi, one of the severely affected areas in Henan province, providing a stable communication signal to areas over 50 square kilometers without interruption for 24 hours.

Marine drones manufactured by Yunzhou Tech in Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province, were also seen assisting in the rescue efforts. A total of 118 marine rescue drones were provided by the tech company in southwest China's Yunnan Province to support Henan rescue teams.

The rescue drone can carry up to three adults and can perform tasks at a distance of up to 800 meters. “The drones can operate in water and perform rescue operations with remote control by operators,” Huang said.

“Offering phone functions by drones in disaster areas symbolizes the creativity and coercion of Chinese tech workers,” Hangkongwuyu, an aviation influencer, said in a note sent to the Global Times on Thursday.
