ADA (The Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliance is a set of rules and standards that require all areas of life, including websites, to be accessible to people with different abilities.

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines ) requirements are recommendations for developers on the accessibility of web content.

Creating a safe and accessible environment for everyone, regardless of their physical, physiological and other characteristics, is called inclusivity. In Ukraine, the norm for inclusiveness of sitesat the legislative levelis prescribed only for web resources of government bodies. However, for example, in the USA there is a comprehensive law on Americans with Disabilities — The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which applies to various areas of life - employment, transportation, public accommodations, obtaining services, telecommunications and technology.

Of course, ADA compliance, like WCAG recommendations, is not mandatory for implementation in Ukraine, but they can be used as a guide when creating accessible websites for different categories of the population.



ADA Compliance Standards
ADA compliance ensures that users with various disabilities can effectively interact with your website—ordering a product or using a service, finding and then processing the information they need, and more.

The requirements can be summarized into several specific points:

Semantic layoutThis will make the content accessible to special programs that can read text and other elements aloud.
The right combination of colors - the text should contrast with the background. It is better to use dark letters on a light background or vice versa. And here is a combination of blue with red and green with redadvise to avoid(red text on a green or blue background or vice versa). This creates excessive strain on the eyes.
The function of changing the color contrast and font size will help people with visual impairments and cognitive impairments.
A consistent layout is a clear website structure with a clear hierarchy and no unpredictable elements.

Subtitles and transcriptions for all video materials posted on the site.
An alternative description of images that can be read by screen readers.
Correct descriptions and statements - for example, a person with a disability instead of a disabled person, a wheelchair instead of a wheelchair, etc. Also, specific and highly specialized terms should be avoided in texts and products that are intended for a wide audience.
Simple and clear forms to fill out - it is important that they are free of errors and ambiguities.

WCAG requirements
ADA Compliance isn’t the only standard for creating inclusive websites. Web developers around the world also consider WCAG, the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) set of web content accessibility guidelines.

W3C is an international organization that develops and implements technology standards recognized worldwide. Other well-known standards of the Consortium are HTML and XML (web document markup languages), CSS (web page style language), and many others.

WCAG was first published in 1999 and has been continually updated and modified.

The WCAG guidelines are based on 4 principles:

Perception - Website content should be easy to understand cognitively and visually.
Clarity - intuitive interface and navigation, predictable structure, readable text.
Control - access navigation by voice or keyboard.
Reliability - correct display of the website on different devices and browsers, compatibility with assistive technologies (for example, screen readers).
It is also recommended to ask the POUR question before creating a website or other product:

Is it perceivable?
Is it operable?
Is it understandable?
Is it robust?
Answering these questions will help you understand how well your web product meets the current WCAG requirements.

What is the difference between ADA and WCAG?
ADA is, first and foremost, a law that is mandatory to comply with in the United States. American companies must comply with it without exception in all areas. Otherwise, businesses in the United States will face penalties. In other countries, including Ukraine, ADA Compliance is a kind of role model.

WCAG, unlike ADA, is a set of guidelines that are not legally binding in any country in the world. On the other hand, WCAG is a technology standard, without which your website will lose to competitors.
