When choosing an EHR, interoperability and data sharing are the first considerations. Interoperable EHRs reduce paperwork, cut costs, and make it easier for you and your patient to keep results organized and ready to view from anywhere.
From public health informatics to routine lab work to ensuring all involved clinicians have a complete picture of each patient's health, interoperability is a must-have EHR feature .
4. Do you want a solution designed for your specialty?
Many vendors offer EMR solutions specifically designed for different specialties.
For example, a pediatric practice might need records to help enter measurements as the child grows and a vaccination schedule. But an oncology team doesn't need any of these features and instead needs to schedule periodic radiation and chemotherapy treatments over many months. Or maybe you just need a certain kind of chart template .
If this is important, be sure to ask your vendors how their solutions differ by specialization.
Questions to Ask EMR Vendors
1. Is your solution CCHIT and ONC-ATCB certified?
The extent to which each EHR can help you take mom database advantage of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) program through the Medical Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is one of the most important factors for some organizations when choosing software.
If you really want to participate in MIPS and MACRA, you need to exclude solutions that are not CCHIT and ONC-ATCB certified from your consideration. You can do this in the Platforms software catalog by checking the box next to "ONC-ATCB Certified" and then clicking "Filter".
But that's just the beginning. Here are some questions to ask your provider to determine if your EHR is ready for the new payment model.
2. What does the patient portal offer?
Patient portals have become nearly ubiquitous among electronic health records, in part because they are driven by meaningful use. And for good reason. A patient portal with secure messaging can reduce no-shows, provide instant and secure information to authorized patients, and generally promote highly interactive physician-patient interactions .
But not all patient portals are created equal.
When choosing an EHR system, ask providers if patients can view the following on their portals:
Full diagrams
Treatment plans, past and present
Diagnoses
History of meetings
Vaccination records
Laboratory test results
Outstanding balance
It's also helpful to find out if patients can request refills and contact your practice directly through the portal.
This list is not exhaustive, but it will get you started.

Re: Which organizations do you want to easily share records with?
Interoperability is definitely one of the most crucial factors when selecting an EHR system. Seamless data sharing between healthcare providers, labs, and public health organizations ensures better coordination and improves patient outcomes.
One key feature to enhance interoperability is to develop patient portal that allows patients to access their medical records, lab results, and treatment history in real time. A well-designed portal can also streamline communication between patients and providers, reducing administrative burdens and improving engagement.
Additionally, it's essential to ensure that the EHR system is tailored to the specific needs of a practice. Whether it's pediatrics, oncology, or another specialty, customization plays a vital role in optimizing workflows.
Would love to hear what others think—what features do you consider most important in an interoperable EHR?
