Skype has invited its users to try out and evaluate a trial version of its translation service Translator. The program is currently available for live, real-time audio and video calls in four languages ​​– English, Spanish, Mandarin and Italian (the list of languages ​​will be expanded in the future). These responses resemble the experience-based development of the human mind and allow it to “understand” complex systems such as language. Wired Magazine called the new program “the most surprising innovation in Skype – its ability to reliably recognize the speech of virtually every person,” noting rhythm and intonation.

Skype and Microsoft have also had to make preliminary decisions on one controversial issue: certain elements (such as repetitive vocal tics and profanity) have been removed from translations – they are unrecognizable and untranslatable. So, Skype Translator is currently making some adjustments to the conversation – and this could be interpreted as censorship. There is no doubt that Skype Translator users, who will use the program to simplify international communication, will have their say on this issue in the long run.
