Replacing humans with virtual workers in the travel and hospitality industries could have a unique impact on tourism-based economies. It could also change the way people experience culturally rich places.

“One of the reasons people travel is to learn about the local culture, which is practically eliminated by this system. Eventually, people will stop waiting for that,” says Lisa Kresge, a senior researcher at the Center for Work at the University of California, Berkeley.

Based on the information on the Sextant Stays website and third-party services, it is not always clear that the hotel is not staffed.

Before meeting with a virtual concierge, Sextant guests need to verify their identity by uploading a selfie and a photo of their driver’s license, passport, or national ID using Sextant’s partner service, Superhog.

Despite the hotel’s “extreme automation,” it doesn’t use facial recognition. Sextant Stays CEO Andreas King-Giovanis says that Superhog verifies a guest’s identity using a selfie and identification data to prevent credit card fraud.

Under Superhog's terms, the company's partners also check visitors against a database of individuals who have committed criminal and sex offenses.

As an added security measure, the Sextant self-check-in system generates a unique code that guests can use to enter the building. However, it doesn’t work without glitches.

For example, at The Lola, the automatic door locking system sometimes fails, leaving the building's front door ajar. King-Giovanis says that in every country where Sextant operates, there are security personnel monitoring the properties.

Guests can purchase aspirin and shaving supplies from CVS branded vending machines, and use a pantry stocked with toilet paper and coffee. Sextant shares the profits from sales of products from the CVS vending machine, which in turn charges a fixed rental fee.
