Why Gender Equality Is Good for Everyone, Including Men - Michael Kimmel

Post by metoc15411 »

Women are significantly underrepresented in the tech field : Emily Peck of the Huffington Post reported that "[t]he percentage of computer jobs held by women has actually declined over the past 23 years."

Oh.

And while women are encouraged to simply " lean in " or simply "try harder," Michael Kimmel argues that it takes more than just strong-willed women to break the glass ceiling . Men need to join the fight, too.

Beyond the obvious moral implications of gender equality, having more women in the tech industry has real benefits.

“Research continues to show that well-managed diversity some of the key features of band leads to more innovation and is associated with improved financial performance—factors that benefit all employees,” says Ilene H. Lang in a survey conducted by Catalyst.

According to Catalyst , companies that promote gender diversity see a 53% higher return on equity, a 42% higher return on sales, and a 66% higher return on invested capital. What’s more, in 2009 , the stocks of the 12 Fortune 500 companies with female CEOs rose an average of 50%, compared to the S&P 500, which rose just 25%.

And since women make up only 14.2% of the top five executive positions at S&P 500 companies, men are an integral part of the fight against gender inequality. Otherwise, it will be a problem for years to come if women continue to suffer from underrepresentation in the workplace.

How: This is a big problem, and I can’t say I have a definitive answer. Because the problem here isn’t necessarily the industry, but society as a whole . However, while you may not be able to change society (at least not overnight), you can take responsibility and do your part to educate yourself on the issues women face in the workplace, and advocate for the women you work with. Because gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue. It affects men, too .

The Unknown Genius Who Could Change Science for the Better - Jedida Isler
While mainstream journalism has exploited the lack of diversity for both women and people of color, few articles address the intersection of the two. That is: What about women of color? I’ve already compiled a list of 11 tech organizations and associations for people of color , but I’ve yet to find one that specifically caters to women of color. (Though if you find one that’s active, let me know. I’d love to hear about it.)

Even in Google’s own diversity report , which they publicly publish as a commitment to promoting diversity, identities are broken down only by race/ethnicity and gender. It’s impossible to see the number of these intersecting identities, only exacerbating the shortage of representation professionals with the intersecting identities they deal with on a daily basis.

In her TED Talk, Jedida Isler shares her experiences working at these different intersections and how these personalities have impacted her life and career, and encourages other STEM professionals to be more inclusive. Inclusivity, Isler believes, can only lead to more innovation and change these fields for the better.

How: Similar to my thoughts on Michael Kimmel’s speech, there is no one easy answer to a problem that is deeply ingrained in the fabric of society. As an individual, you can learn how to best combat racism in the workplace and understand the microaggressions that people of color face on a daily basis (and that you may even unknowingly participate in ). As a leader, you can also educate your team on this and take a zero-tolerance stance toward discrimination.

I understand that not all of us have the power in our various organizations to change this overnight. This lack of representation has been going on for a long time, and it’s not the same as the recent decline in women in computing. However, change within one person can change others. Use your voice to stand up to oppression. It’s another voice for the voiceless.
