What was your first entrepreneurial venture?

It was a disaster. After earning my PhD from NJIT in 1997, I spent several years working as a tech professional in corporate America — and hated every minute of it. Endless lists of projects that were months (and often years) behind schedule. Choked by bureaucracy and sabotaged by office politics.

I remember complaining to my colleagues that if I had known about all the BS associated with a “big corporation,” I would never have left India. One of my managers told me that I might be happier on my own, and despite having little capital or business education, I took his advice and invested my savings in a “dot.com”-era company.

Of course, I made all sorts of mistakes, and it all came overseas chinese in europe data to a quick halt when the dot.bomb happened in 2000. Luckily, my former employer brought me back, but I didn’t stay long and became an entrepreneur again as soon as I could. Looking back, those early failures were my crash course in MBA, and they helped me ultimately understand what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

What legal tech trend should experienced lawyers keep a close eye on?
I am a firm believer in being “on the cutting edge” without going beyond the cutting edge. So right now I am focusing on what is practical, reliable and cost effective. And right now, all of that is happening in the cloud.

That’s because cloud applications completely remove the burden of maintaining or struggling with any office technology. We all have laptops, tablets, and mobile phones, and we can now use the same devices to handle all of our professional tasks. Cloud solutions are changing the very nature of how we view and use technology. Just as “apps” made smartphones “smart,” cloud software now provides solutions that allow lawyers to work smarter, not harder.

After all, tomorrow's lawyer will be able to handle far greater case volumes with far less effort and more reliable results than anyone ever thought possible.

What type of law did you practice before you entered the high tech law business?
Before moving into the legal tech entrepreneurship space, I practiced corporate law, primarily representing private equity funds and companies in mergers and acquisitions. When I was a junior associate representing buyers, I performed due diligence on these transactions. Along with a team of other junior associates, I reviewed all of the target company’s contracts to summarize their contents and identify problematic provisions. When representing a seller, I reviewed the target company’s contracts to complete disclosure schedules in the merger agreement or stock purchase agreement.

Bleary-eyed and between slices of cold pizza at 3am, I saw first-hand how inefficient and inaccurate these contract review processes can be.
