Spain's Telefónica and Cellnex have joined forces with four other telco multinationals (France's Bouygues, Netherlands' KPN, Italy's Windtre and South Africa's MTN) to create Alaian, an alliance that will aim to connect the open innovation ecosystems of these six companies, which are present in 50 countries and have 700 million customers.

The alliance will seek to "join forces to share best practices in innovation and generate different use cases on the latest market developments and the technologies they are implementing, true mint data to their ambition to constantly innovate," they said in a statement on Thursday.

The alliance will also pursue global searches to attract companies that are aligned with its strategic innovation priorities.

His first initiative is the announcement of a global call for startups that opens this Thursday. Alaian will look for startups with 5G-based use cases in different sectors, such as communications and infrastructure, industry, manufacturing and logistics, mobility, public services and energy, metaverse and Web3, entertainment and gaming, and retail.

The selected companies will be able to access the 5G connectivity and edge computing resources of the alliance's member telecos, as well as carry out tests in the 5G LABs with the intention of integrating them into the solutions of the different companies participating in the union. They will also be able to exchange knowledge with specialists and network teams with whom they can co-develop and solve problems together, taking advantage of the technical, commercial and product support of the alliance members' network of experts, mentors and trainers.

In addition, the selected startups will benefit from the resources available to the alliance's telecoms, such as knowledge of the markets in which they are located, access to their network of contacts, design and implementation of pilots with clients around the world. Apart from this, there will be the opportunity to help the startups by supporting them in raising funds, training for entrepreneurs, visibility and exposure in the headquarters of the alliance partners, flagship stores, demonstration centers, laboratories and Hubs to show their product to the network of clients and partners. It will also be possible for any of the investment vehicles that are members of Alaian to invest capital, as well as access to its global network of venture capital companies.
