Jordi González Teba is passionate about communication. In addition to working at Mercabarna as a CSR communications technician, he works as a freelance Digital Project Manager, collaborating on the development and implementation of digital strategies for SMEs . With a background in journalism, he immersed himself in digital marketing when he was trying to help a relative who was being scammed with a website, and the rest is history. Discover it in the following interview.
You're a multitasker immersed in several projects. What's your workday like?
Well, it's a varied and balanced day, like a healthy diet! During the mornings, I work at Mercabarna as a CSR communications mexico mobile database technician , and from 12:30 p.m. I'm free to focus on the rest of my duties. During the afternoons, I enjoy greater flexibility, allowing me to balance work and family life. I also combine more effective work with training, which is essential for tackling new projects . Occasionally, I spend all day in front of the computer, but I usually call it a day between 7 and 8 p.m.
What led you to embark on the adventure of digital freelancing in 2011?
The possibilities that the internet opened up in the field of communications interested me back in college, while studying journalism. That's why I interned at an internet portal like Telépolis (anyone who remembers these portals is getting old
.
But I got into digital marketing to help a relative who was being scammed : he hired a website for which he paid a lot of money monthly and had to work for a five-year contract. And it was a Flash website, which would never rank well!
I was managing Mercabarna's website and had studied SEO at university, so I explained to him that he wouldn't achieve anything with the website they had created for him. I explained that I would advise him on how to acquire clients online. Soon, he had a website that was climbing the ranks on Google and an AdWords strategy that brought him clients immediately . The economic crisis was already making itself felt, but the family business was able to weather it.
Even back then, I thought the potential of digital marketing for SMEs was enormous , because it gives them the opportunity to gain visibility in the local market and compete with companies with far greater financial resources . And now there are even more tools! Digital transformation, which is so widely discussed in large companies, must reach SMEs if they want to remain competitive.
What are the differences between your freelance work with SMEs, etc., and what you do at Mercabarna?
The projects are very different, but my approach is quite similar. Based on the objectives and target audience, I devise actions, share them with the team, and we plan and execute them . I always contribute new ideas aimed at achieving the objectives.
At Mercabarna, I've coordinated complex communication campaigns such as the Mercabarna Enfoca competition and the Mercabarna Race. In both, the digital aspect was very important. But even more important was organizing events and satisfying opinion leaders.
On the other hand, my work with SMEs is more driven by achieving commercial results . Although as a marketing and communications consultant I'd like to work more often with longer deadlines, the priority is almost always to obtain clients or sales as quickly as possible. On the other hand, I have more freedom to integrate new methodologies . And the actions are even more varied, since getting the most out of digital marketing and pushing clients down the funnel requires planning a strategy that involves SEO, SEM, content, email marketing, affiliation, and the use of specific tools.
