1. Creating value with digital technologies
If the value proposition of the service provided is based on (entirely) digital technologies, then we have a good indicator of a digital business model. Amazon, Alibaba, Facebook, Google, etc. would not have been possible without the use of the Internet.

One of the best examples is the difference between digital offers and digital business models. If you read your electricity consumption through an app, then that is a digital product from your electricity amazon database supplier. When you order transport through an app that matches your requirements with a driver, that is a digital business model.

To become a customer and use services, you need to use digital channels. Digital business models are sometimes based entirely on digital channels. This is especially important for business models that rely on early onboarding (free models) or for marketplace platforms (e.g. Amazon running ads when you search online).

4. USP is created digitally
If customers are willing to pay for services and products you create online, then this is a strong indicator of a digital business model because customer value can be created digitally and monetized.
