Know exactly what products and services you want to provide

When we decided to open a bike shop in Montreal, we didn’t know where to start. Finding bike parts or a space, how to do it? Since my partner and I opened Rebicycle two years ago, we’ve learned a few things. Here are a few tips we want to share with future bike shop owners:

1) Determine your target.

The first step in a project like this is to determine who you are going to sell to. Racing cyclists or mountain bikers? Casual cyclists or serious cyclists? The best way to define your target audience is to first define your business owner data expertise, rather than thinking about what will make you more money. If you define the core of your business, it will grow organically. After this initial development phase, you can hire experts and target other audiences.

The most popular bike shops are rarely those that offer too generic a service. After determining your target, you must therefore define the products and services that you will offer. Do you want to sell specialized bikes or mid-range bikes? Will you be equipped for elaborate modifications or only for simple repairs? These questions are crucial and determining to position yourself well when you open your business.

3) Find a good distributor.

Once you know what you want to sell, it's time to choose a distributor. If you're new to the business, it's likely to be difficult to get everything on credit. Expect to pay for everything up front at first (once you've placed a few orders, you can negotiate). Once you've solidified your first relationship with one supplier, you can start reaching out to other suppliers. Having a good established relationship will give you credibility with other suppliers.
