What's wrong with cybersecurity
13.09.2023
Cybersecurity protocols have come a long way. But there's still plenty of room for improvement. Experts interviewed by InformationWeek discuss some of the under-researched areas.
According to IBM's "Cost of a Data Breach" report , the average cost of a hack globally in 2023 is $4.45 million. And according to Cybersecurity Ventures' "2022 Official Cybercrime Report," total global losses from cyberattacks could reach $8 trillion this year.
Of course, cybercriminals are constantly adapting to new conditions, so we can’t put all the blame on the industry that is supposed to protect us from them. At the same time, many organizations are lagging behind the attackers — floundering in their attempts to counter the latest threats or simply ignoring them and hoping for the best.
Even proactive CISOs are constrained by budget australia mobile database and operational inefficiencies. Vast arsenals of security solutions are deployed haphazardly around the perimeter, leaving many gaps open for motivated hackers to exploit. And talent shortages are a hindrance. According to ISC 2’s 2022 Cybersecurity Workforce Study , the world needs an additional 3.4 million cybersecurity professionals.
Shortage of skilled workers and problems with recruitment
A 2021 report from the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) and industry analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) found that 57% of 500 professionals surveyed believe that a skills shortage is negatively impacting their organization. So not only are there not enough people to handle the tasks needed, but those who are there do not have the full range of skills needed.
