China aims for 'full' economic self-sufficiency

(Global Times) – Through a series of recent summits, white papers and speeches, China's top leaders, including President Xi Jinping, have signaled that the country will focus on expanding its domestic supply chain and innovating on its own to become fully self-sufficient in the economy and core technologies as external risks continue to mount.
Although the world's second-largest economy needs to put significant emphasis on economic and technological self-reliance to cope with the unprecedented challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as China's relentless pursuit in many areas, China will not give up on cooperation, and will continue to advance global cooperation in key areas, industry analysts said on Sunday.
In an article published Sunday by the Communist Party of China's (CPC) leading journal Qiushi Journal, Xi said China should establish a self-developing, manageable, safe and reliable domestic production and supply system in areas concerning national security to ensure self-recovery at critical moments and ensure normal economic operation under extreme conditions.

In an article on the "major issues" of China's medium- and long-term chile telegram number database socio-economic development strategy, the Chinese president also called for building a "master map" in core technologies, including high-speed rail, electric power equipment, new energy, telecommunications equipment and other fields.
" To ensure China's industrial security and national security, we must build a self-developing, manageable, safe and reliable industrial and supply chain. We must strive to have at least one alternative source of important products and supply channels to form a necessary industrial enterprise ," Xi wrote.
