China's smartphone shipments jump 93% in January

Shipments in January compared with a 12.8% drop to 25.2 million units in December, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The academy attributed the decline to weak demand for new phones and consumers' tendency to hold on to their phones longer.

The Academy’s data shows that 40 new smartphone models were launched in January, up 17.6% year-on-year. Chinese brands continued to dominate shipments in January, with 33.73 million units, or 84.1% of all shipments.

Domestic and international smartphone shipments totaled 39.57 million units in January, up 94.3% year-on-year. The recovery compares to a 0.3% year-on-year increase to 86.4 million units in Q4 2020.

Domestic smartphone shipments fell 20.4% to 296 million units in 2020 from 372 million units in 2019, according to the academy. In 2019, smartphone shipments fell 4% year-on-year.

However, International Data Corp. estimates that China's smartphone argentina telegram number database market fell 11.2% in 2020 with shipments of 326 million units.

In 2020, Huawei had a 38.3% share of the smartphone market, accounting for the largest share of the smartphone market in China. Vivo had 17.7% of the market, Oppo had 17.4%, Xiaomi had 12%, and Apple had 11.1%. However, Xiaomi showed a recovery in the second half of 2020, with its shipments increasing by 29% year-on-year.
