China has made a major breakthrough in producing advanced 7nm computing chips that can rival those of global industry leaders such as US companies Nvidia and AMD.
Shanghai Tianshu Zhixin Semiconductor Co., a domestic chip maker, announced on Wednesday that it has launched the country's first homegrown 7nm GPGPU chip, called "Big Island" or "BI."
GPGPU is an abbreviation for General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit, which refers to a graphics processing unit (GPU). It can perform non-specialized calculations in addition to its traditional purpose of computing for computer graphics, such as calculations typically handled by a central processing unit (CPU).
