This report shows you how many visitors are new and how many have visited your site before.

Here you can see how many people visited your site 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. times within a certain period.

What can you do with these numbers?
You can see how many visits are active on your site for less than 1 minute. So in short: what % of visitors are really interested in your service.
You can see if there is a difference in engagement between new and returning visitors. I use this report mainly for my SEA/SEO campaigns. This gives you insight into whether there are differences in visits/conversions within these campaigns.
In addition, you can see how often people visit your site. And not unimportant: how many visits do you need to achieve a conversion. Use the standard segment 'visits with conversions' for this.
