Roche and Wayra (Telefónica) launch a healthcare startup accelerator

Roche Farma laboratories and Telefónica's innovation hub, Wayra, announced on Tuesday the creation of Púlsar by Roche, a new accelerator for startups in the healthcare sector, especially in the field of ophthalmology.

Púlsar by Roche was created with the aim of creating a meeting space for emerging companies, healthcare providers and other agents in the healthcare system to promote moj data innovative technological projects in Spain that have a real impact on improving the health and quality of life of patients, Roche and Wayra explained in a statement.

The startup accelerator is based on the premise that companies need support to solve the current health challenges they face and that the future of innovation depends on the collaboration of the different agents that make up the health ecosystem, such as hospitals, research centres, professionals or managers. And, above all, taking into account emerging companies, or startups, which are capable of contributing new ideas and developments based on technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things or Big Data.

«In a first phase, Púlsar by Roche wants to become the reference hub for innovation in ophthalmology in Spain, bringing together in the same forum all those capable of proposing technological projects that translate into real improvements to cover unmet patient needs,» says Santiago Conesa, Ophthalmology iSquad Leader and project manager at Roche Farma Spain. «If there is an area in which we are stronger together, it is in innovation, and that is why we want to open the doors of Púlsar to all startups that want to propose new ideas and solutions based on technology,» he adds.

For her part, Paloma Castellano, director of Wayra Madrid, highlights that “the push towards digitalisation that we have experienced in recent years is transforming all sectors and the health field is no exception. At Wayra we are seeing how numerous solutions are emerging so that people can better control their health, prevent illnesses thanks to technology and do so easily from the comfort of their home or a simple mobile application. Having the support of Roche Farma and Wayra (Telefónica group), through Púlsar, will help high-impact entrepreneurs in the health field to scale up faster and with the support of a large support network.
