Relationship lessons in analog times

There was a time when maintaining ties went beyond bombarding us with commercial messages, unmissable offers and other invasions of our space/time.
Never before have companies known so much about each of us – starting with all our personal data and going as far as detailing our preferences in the most diverse aspects of our purchasing journey, such as our favorite color of underwear. And this is clear from the amount of messages and other contacts that brands strive to send us and keep themselves alive in our memory. This is an improvement over what was seen (and done) back in the days of analog life. Is that so?

I am not a believer in the past, nor am I nostalgic – but I ivory coast telemarketing list have to be fair: even in their simplicity, some “relationship” practices from other times had an enormous power of enchantment and proven effect.

One of them was typical at the end of every year: the distribution of wall calendars. Whether at Seu João's grocery store, the neighborhood market or the gas station, this was the gift that everyone expected. And used! Let he who has never seen, in his own home or at his grandparents', that little sheet hanging behind the kitchen door cast the first stone... Something useful that made your brand remembered every single day.

Some “establishments”, as well as service providers, even invested in nicer “gifts”: diaries, watches and even Christmas panettone and baskets. Even though they were “cheap” little things, most of the time, it was always a delight to receive this deference.

Other ways of being “close” to us that these analog businesses used and that have fallen into disuse include the old “hanger-on notebook” and the practice of good old chat.

Regarding the first, I ask: is there any more conclusive proof of trust in the consumer than delivering your product or performing your service and simply recording the amounts due in a notebook so that, at a more opportune moment (usually on “payment day”), the “customer” can settle his “account”? Today, smiles and trust only come after the transaction is approved by your card administrator. And, if the company does not fulfill its part of the agreement, you have to figure out how to charge for the delivery…

The practice of chatting went beyond “hello, my name is so-and-so, and yours?”, accompanied by a formal smile in stores or other messages sent by virtual assistants via WhatsApp or another platform. It was common to enter a store and be called by name and have to answer how your family is doing (a question invariably accompanied by solid comments about specific people and facts).

Of course I recognize the enormous achievements that new relationship tools allow us to achieve. However, if there are gains in speed, ease and other aspects of buying and selling situations, it seems that a certain touch of good old humanity is missing, right?
