Will Huawei Technologies Become China's Tesla Challenger?

From Alibaba-backed Xpeng to Nvidia partner Li Auto, there are plenty of Tesla imitators in China looking to emulate the U.S. electric car maker’s success and ride the wave of the industry’s revolution. But the real Tesla challenger could be Huawei Technologies Co. But some experts say the telecom giant is at the center of Sino-American tech tensions.

“ If you look at Tesla’s stock price , you’ll know where the future of cars is ,” Xu Zhijun, Huawei’s rotating chairman , said in a public lecture in 2019. Possible reorientation
Huawei’s move into automotive research began in 2013, when the company quietly launched a division to develop internet-based applications for cars. In April 2019, the company made its debut at the Shanghai International Auto Show, announcing plans to become an auto parts supplier. A month later, Huawei officially established an automotive business unit focused on smart car solutions.
