Controlling the internet's 'messages' will be key to Asia's growing influence. But its two biggest markets, China and India, have two very different ways of doing it – PRC.TODAY Portal

(AF) – The advent of the Internet in China in the 1990s made it much easier to access information published in foreign media. People could suddenly read news published on numerous foreign websites and encounter different opinions about the Chinese government and the Communist Party , when previously the only way to do so was by listening to international radio broadcasts such as the Voice of America on shortwave radio.

While the Chinese government has been able to enforce regulations and censor content on Chinese media and websites, it has become more difficult to restrict Chinese people's access to foreign media that may be critical of the Chinese government.

The two main types of content banned on the Chinese internet are anti-government speech and pornography. Websites are expected to censor the content they host and report violations to authorities.

The Internet Information Services Governance Measures adopted in 2000 required that Internet content providers be prohibited from creating or publishing information that "harms the country's reputation and interests," "disrupts public order and undermines social stability," or "promotes obscenity, pornography, gambling, violence, murder and terrorism, or incites crime."

The regulation says Internet service providers must log users' login times, usernames, Internet addresses or domain names, and telephone numbers.

Because of its lack of control over foreign websites, the Chinese government has decided to block foreign websites that do not meet censorship criteria. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, which are often used by Tibetan separatist groups or members of Falun Gong (considered an “evil cult” in China) to organize protests, have all been blocked by the “Great Firewall.”
