The social network for which Elon Musk paid $44 billion in October last year is in free fall , although the extent of its decline is not really known for certain. Remember that Twitter, which had 368.4 million active monthly users in 2022, has not published data on its user numbers since Musk took the helm of the company at the end of last year.
Despite Musk's swearing that Twitter has broken usage records in recent weeks (coinciding precisely with the debut of Threads), few people believe in a businessman with the airs of a showman and an unhealthy penchant for lies.
Twitter has morphed into X to look in the dominican republic phone number data mirror of the Chinese-born “superapp” WeChat and provide a home for a whole host of features , from online payments to e-commerce and messaging. Elon Musk wants to replicate WeChat’s phenomenal success in China in the West by leveraging X, his “app for everything.”
However, while Musk's "app for everything" sounds pretty good on paper, in practice the South African's plans seem rather difficult to execute. After all, a "super app" like the one X aspires to become must guarantee its users a minimum of stability and confidence. And Twitter, whose workforce has shrunk noticeably in recent months, is clearly not the bearer of such stability and confidence. The blue bird's social network has been burdened by multiple technical problems lately and its customer service is currently virtually non-existent.
Musk may try to fill Twitter's lack of stability and trust by recruiting new employees, but that will only partially repair the damage he himself has inflicted on the platform with his erratic and reckless decisions.
Despite Musk’s visionary credentials – his phenomenal success at Tesla and SpaceX attests – it seems unlikely that the South African will actually be able to pull off X. At both Tesla and SpaceX, Musk had a sensational combination of innovation and resources going for him. And while it was easy to dream of making electric cars 15 years ago, only Elon Musk had the determination and financial resources to turn what seemed like a pipe dream into reality.
Elon Musk has a tough time turning X into the “app for everything” he has in mind
